I used to live in Orange County (now I live a few minutes from it) and hadn't heard about this story until now. Apparently a local resident and rabbi was fined $56,000 for holding prayer services in his home because of a county ordinance prohibiting "operating a synagogue or any function related to a synagogue and/or church services...." in a person's home. Interesting, because Status has been holding Small Groups and is starting house churches in people's homes. At least now the US Court of Appeals ruled that the county ordinance is vague and unconstitutional, so we won't have to go through the same nightmare this rabbi apparently went through. I can't believe that in America today there are still public legal struggles against peaceful, private religious gatherings.
