Final Report Requirements

The report should be 10-15 pages including the cover sheet and references and/or bibliography. The title page will be structured like this:

Introduction is three parts. The first part is an introduction to the subject. The second is a bibliographical review with the last sentence going as, "In this work I will…" The third part of the introduction will explain how the paper will be organized. It will include sentences such as, "In section two…"

The last section of the paper should include conclusions or final remarks (followed by the bibliography/references).

The report may be double-spaced and may include examples and diagrams. Just don't avoid writing!

The paper is due 4/15/06. A draft of the report is due by 3/28/06.

Get Ready to Present...

Note: The longer presentation (for Dr. Montagne) will be on the same topic as the paper. Talk to Dr. Montagne to get a topic approved and a date to present before the end of February.

Questions from the class will be handled through WebCT asynchronously. We may also use WebCT to post references, etc.

What will the presentation be graded on?

1. Organization - flow, appropriate topic, timeliness (using time wisely), covering the topic in the time frame, preparedness
2. Presentation - Use of visual aides, vocal quality, confidence with the topic, eye contact, avoiding annoyances, appearance
3. Content - Visual aide design, topic, credibility, evidence that you've researched your topic and know it well, follow-up (ability to answer questions)

Presentation Grading Criteria

Topics should be of a technical nature. At least one of the three topics should be from the text book, and should be of interest to a variety of audiences.

Our grade will be determined by three presentations (two short for Dr. Leeson and one long for Dr. Montagne) and an essay (for Dr. Montagne). You need to set up within ~1 minute for your presentation so that you'll have 18 or so minutes to present.

What is important in a presentation?

• Voice style — projection, speed, length of sentences, clarity
• Audience  participation
• Credibility — citing sources/references
• Dress appropriately
• Effective use of visual aides — refrain from annoying PowerPoint transitions, etc.
• Content & communication (equal weight)
• Mastery of the subject

The most important pieces (these are just what we came up with in class, but they are good ideas for the homework):

Answer the question: What are the five or six things you think are most important in a speech and how much should those things be worth? Also next Tuesday will be five speeches, so have four topics in mind when you come in next time.
